Position: Shelter Substitute
  • Pay: $150/night (5pm-8am) and $110/day (8am-5pm) for shelter substitutes who are on call. $150 after completing training (Est. 15 hours)
  • Hours: Night shift (5pm-8am), Day shift (8am-5pm)
  • Respond to: Shelter Services Manager, Evening Shelter Manager and other staff as necessary.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide overnight supervision of the shelter and all residents and/or serving on-call status with staff cell phone during assigned working hours.
  • Shelter supervision includes:
  • Keeping the shelter calm and safe.
  • Ensuring shelter remains clean and sanitary.
  • Transferring the crisis line.
  • Providing supportive listening when necessary (keeping boundaries and setting time limits so that you can attend to other duties).
  • Responding to crisis calls on the OASIS cell phone, reporting to the hospital, WCSO, BPD, or the Magistrates office in a timely manner when necessary.
  • Providing medical and legal advocacy to clients as needed.
  • Attending to daily administrative duties.
  • Completing intake procedure, clarifying and enforcing house guidelines with clients.
  • Providing childcare support to parents staying at shelters when appropriate.
  • Supporting clients who are staying overnight in an emergency hotel stay.
  • Picking up, sorting, and putting away shelter groceries.
  • Provide support to clients with service, information, and referrals.
  • May provide support to evening support groups, if scheduled on corresponding nights.
  • Coordinate with the staff person whose shift you are covering to pick up staff cell phone and keys. Pick up the crisis phone from the office by 4:45pm.
  • Subs must remain alcohol and drug-free while on shift and always have cell phone service.
  • Assisting with other duties as needed.
  • Complete Training Program (estimated 15 hours)
  • 3 Nights at Shelter (two 3-hour shifts, one 5-hour shift)
  • Office shift (1 hour)
  • Read OASIS volunteer manual (3 hours)
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Non-judgmental and empathetic approach towards all persons from various backgrounds, which conveys dignity and respect for an individual’s inherent value.
  • Interpersonal, communicative, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to create a supportive environment.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must meet the necessary Motor Vehicle Record Check requirements set forth by Philadelphia Insurance Companies, have a valid Driver’s License, and up-to-date vehicle insurance to operate the OASIS vehicle when necessary.
  • Agreement with the OASIS mission, vision, values, and philosophy.
Working Conditions:
  • Some evening, weekend, and overnight work will be required.
  • May be required to lift items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Hazards may include physical threats from victims’ abusers. Client services staff may also be exposed to physical threats from mediating disputes between residents and illness from communal living situations.
